The learning journey

The second day in Macau, we visited the Diocesan Social Communications Center which is housed in a cinema. It is a commercial cinema run by the Center aims to provide families with family entertainment and also screens popular first-run films for tourists and residents as a source of income for the media apostolate.

We were brief by its Director Kevin Kwan. It has a broadcasting division, production division and social and pastoral communication division. I really malu of our Communication Center, again, the comparison of Arabian horse and the ass was applicable.

Later at the Bishop's Chancery, we held meeting with the Diocesan Laity Association consisting of representatives from all 5 parishes in Macau. We were treated to a sumptuous lunch of Chinese and Portuguese dishes and the famous Portuguese tarts.

The Bible Society was one of the most active organisations in Macau. The Society not only active in promoting Bible knowledge and courses in the diocese but also reaching out to other Bible societies / organisations throughout the world. In fact, three members will be coming to Malaysia with us to meet up with the Little Rock Bible group to further cooperation between the two organisations.

We have the opportunity to visit the famous Ruins of St. Paul's Church. It was ten minutes walk away from the Cathedral and Bishop's Chancery. Mrs Anna Lee, a Committee member of the Laity Association and a trained tourist Guide, led the tour. We gained deeper knowledge of the history of the Ruins and the Catholic Church in Macau.

The learning journey

The last day in Hong Kong. Few of us decided must have Dim Sum. So we skip breakfast at the hotel and have Dim Sum at a nearby restaurant.

The Dim Sum tasted alright but most important was the feeling of the atmosphere of Hong Kongites morning habit of yam cha (drinking tea with Dim Sum).

After our Dim Sum breakfast, we packed our luggage to leave for Macau. Before proceeding to the harbour, we stopped at the Diocesan book shop at the Catholic Center. It looked impressive. However, besides the religious books, statues reminding us this was a Catholic-run bookshop, the sales personnel and shop staff did not make us feel the same.

We left Hong Kong by 4:00 pm ferry and arrived at our Macau hotel one hour later. It was situated away from the city center at a residential area. This gave us an opportunity to have a feel of the lives of Macau's local community.

The first stop of our visit was the Diocesan Youth Pastoral Center. We have a meeting with the youths and toured the impressive center catering solely for young people. It was equipped with library, meeting rooms, kitchenette and activities facilities.

The meeting ended at about 10:00 pm. We decided to go for a night "pilgrimage" to St. Mark's Square. It was situated inside a grand complex with hotels, canals, shops, cafes, and the heart of the complex is, do not be so naive, the Casino.

Yes, it is the newest Casino complex in Macau, The Venetian. It consists of many wings with many squares and canals. It uses the names of saints to name after the squares. St. Mark is one of them. The artificial blue sky covering the squares and canals, gives you the illusion of bright day light.

The artificial blue sky makes it a city never sleep.

A day of feasting

Today is the first day of Hari Raya Puasa. We visited Rosnah(pic, left), my wife's ex-colleague house around noon.

She is a very good cook and we usually enjoy her Raya cooking very much.

We also visited our neighbour Professor Datuk Shariff and Datin Shariffah. Two of his three children, Shah and Lisa were at home. Their youngest son Din was studying in Australia.

Later in the evening, we attended the wedding dinner hosted by our friend Mr. & Mrs Lee Ching Hock for his son's marriage in Kuala Lumpur. Mr. and Mrs Lee are well known business and community leader in Kajang. It is 100-table grand dinner function.

The learning journey

The second day started early. We have breakfast in the hotel, so no Dim Sum today. Alas, second day in Hong kong without Dim Sum !

Today we were going to the Diocesan Center next to the Cathedral, which housed many diocesan organisations and commissions.

We visited :
1. Diocesan Catechetical Center (DCC)
2. The Catholic News (Kong Kao Po)
3. Diocesan Audio Visual Center
4. Caritas Social Care
5. Caritas Family Service

DCC Director Amelia Lau

I was most impressed by the Audio Visual Center. It staffed with many professional technical staff and modern equipment. It put to shame our KL Archdiocesan Communication Center, which equally well staff and funded in its own big building. It is like comparing an Arabian stallion to an ass, literally. I wondered when our Bishops went to Hong Kong, they must be wearing dark dark glasses and patronised the toilets only. Compared with Hong Kong, our toilets are bigger because we have big land and space. We are proud of it!

We were briefed by the AV Center Director, Dr. Yung (pic right). The Hong Kong Diocesan AV Center produced a DVD monthly with pastoral theme, such as St. Paul the Apostle, Eucharist... and so on, to be distributed to all parishes in the diocese. As for our own Communication Center, it was famously known to produce calender yearly late and on sale at the end of December or January only. Besides the calender, I saw nothing useful coming to my parish, or other parishes as well.

Dr. Yung will be coming to Malaysia in the middle of October. I am meeting him to discuss copy right for DVD production and distribution in Malaysia.

Our second day's activities ended late. However, few of us have the opportunity to have roast duck and local dishes for dinner. No goose drumstick... sold out! So I have no Dim Sum and goose drumstick on the second day in Hong Kong. But I am satisfied with the roast duck, char siu and roast pork.

It was the last night in Hong Kong, so a few of us decided to "roam the street". Stephen of Singapore said he would like to have HongKong tongsui (dessert). After some searching, we found one very cosy dessert shop. Josehp Lim, our KL Chairman said eating tongsui together was the most happy time.

Catholic Kong Kao Po Deputy Editor-in-chief, Peter Leung (2nd left)

We have roast duck, and Hong Kong famous Tong Shui(dessert) also...
